Interview with Dr. Arguedas, Head of the Ophthalmology Service of the Policlínica Comarcal del Vendrell.
- Dr. Arguedas, what are the main advances of your Ophthalmology Service?
In recent years, much progress has been made in diagnostic methods and surgical techniques. As for diagnosis, highlights the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which performs a scan with high definition images of the retina, macula, optic nerve and anterior pole, allowing an early diagnosis of diseases such as glaucoma or Macular Degeneration. We also have computerized perimeter, optical biometer, topographer, specular microscope, pachymeter, biomicroscopy with HD images, which allow us to perform a complete examination with the most current technology.
And as for surgical techniques, nowadays, we can achieve a good quality of vision without the need for glasses, with LASER surgery or with INTRAOCULAR LENS IMPLANT according to the pathology and the age of the patient.
- When can laser surgery be performed?
In patients with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, with less than 45 years of age and without symptoms of tired eyesight. Surgery is performed on the superficial layers of the cornea, completely with laser, without punctures, without scalpel and without stitches. It is an effective and safe surgery.
- And in patients older than 45 years?
From that age begin the symptoms of presbyopia (eyestrain) because the lens loses the ability to focus automatically. To dispense with glasses, the solution is the implant of a TRIFOCAL Intraocular Lens, which allows to see clearly from afar, in intermediate and close distance, without glasses. The surgery lasts 8 minutes, is performed under anesthesia only with drops (and sedation) and there are no stitches or bandages. It allows a quick recovery and the results are for a lifetime. We can also implant these lenses in patients with cataracts, allowing to improve vision and dispense with glasses.
- So, Doctor, can eyestrain have a solution?
Yes, indeed, since a few years ago there are many patients who can do their normal life without glasses, they can drive, watch TV, work with their computer, see their mobile phone and read a document, without relying on glasses.
