Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. When a person has had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate over time, causing shingles. While it can affect anyone who has had chickenpox, it is more likely to occur as we get older, or in people with weakened immune systems.
