With the aim of raising awareness of the essential role of caregivers, their impact on family and social life, and the need to rethink a model that falls disproportionately on women, on November 28 the Spanish Council for the Defense of Disability and Dependency (CEDDD) is organizing the conference “Primary caregivers: What if we didn’t exist?”

As pointed out by the CEDDD, in an ageing society with increasing demands for care, not having female carers would be unsustainable. However, their role remains invisible in economic analyses and lacks sufficient structural support. This has a huge impact on families and perpetuates gender inequalities by associating care with women.

Care is essential for the well-being of the elderly, dependent people and minors, but it is often forgotten that behind this care there are people who also need support. The majority are women (almost 90%), who often sacrifice their personal and professional projects.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), 57% of carers spend more than 20 hours a week on these tasks, many of them related to the care of children with specific needs or dependent relatives. In addition, the study by Adecco and the Observatory of Equality and Employment reveals that 8 out of 10 women give up their professional career to take on care work, despite valuing this work at 2,782 euros per month.
