Last Tuesday, January 24, the Policlínica Comarcal del Vendrell joined the “Dóna el millor de tu dóna sang” initiative, promoted by the Department of Health together with the Bank of Blood and Tissues.

The commitment to this initiative was well received by the entire population of the area and the professionals of the Center given the high participation of people who altruistically wanted to donate blood and contribute to saving lives.

Donación de sangre

Blood is a liquid tissue that runs through the body, through blood vessels, carrying cells and all the necessary elements to carry out their vital functions. It transports the nutritive principles from the digestive apparatus to the cells, where the waste substances are also collected to eliminate them thanks to the kidneys, the liver and other organs of excretion. It is also responsible for regulating the transport of oxygen and the elimination of carbon dioxide. It has an important role in functions such as coagulation, immunity and control of body temperature.

All blood donations are separated in the laboratory to obtain three different components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Each of these blood components is transfused to a different patient. Therefore, a single blood donation can benefit three different people. The amount of a person’s blood is related to their age, weight, sex and height. An adult person has between 4.5 and 6 liters of blood, that is, 7% of their body weight.
