On September 8th, World Physiotherapy Day was celebrated, and this year the World Physiotherapy health education campaign has focused on low back pain.

Low back pain is the main cause of disability worldwide, and in most cases it is non-specific and due to a combination of multiple factors. A sedentary lifestyle, inadequate rest, stress, and poor posture at work can be factors that favor the appearance of this type of ailment. In some cases it can last more than three months, causing changes not only at a physical level, but also psychological and social, as it can hinder the patient’s work and leisure activities.

Physiotherapy plays a key role in improving the symptoms caused by low back pain, but it will also be very important in preventing the appearance of pain in the future. In all types of low back pain, rehabilitation is essential to reassure the patient and give meaning to their pain, help in recovery and to be able to return to the activities they enjoy. Understanding that, in most cases, it is not a serious problem helps to lose the fear of movement and allows us to be more active.

Exercise has been shown to be the most effective treatment for low back pain, but no one exercise is better than another – the key is to stay active and do it regularly. Physiotherapists can help find the exercise that you like best and tailor it to your needs to improve your health and prevent low back pain from coming back.
